The spice vanilla comes from the tropical island state of Réunion (formerly called Île Bourbon), near Madagascar. The pod, as we know it, is formed by drying the fruit of a liana-like climbing plantorchid. The process is very complex.
The Aztec people of the Totonacs already knew the secret of growing vanilla a thousand years ago, which is why the region around Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico is also considered to be the place of origin.
