Description
The spice vanilla comes from the tropical island state of Réunion (formerly called Île Bourbon), near Madagascar. The pod as we know it is formed by drying the fruit of a liana-like climbing plantorchid. The process is very complex.
The Aztec people of the Totonacs already knew the secret of growing vanilla a thousand years ago, which is why the region around Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico is considered to be the place of origin.
